Return From the Zine Symposium
I sent my last newsletter the week of the Portland Zine Symposium, which I attended with my friend Laura Jones. It was a special weekend because this was her first time selling her comics and zines from her own booth at a live event. The Zine Symposium was a great success and I came home with a large stack of comics and zines that I bought or traded for that I will share with you over the coming weeks. Even more importantly, I managed to get my hands on a small stack of Laura’s comics that were left over from the event to put in my webstore, as promised in the last post.
Laura has a rare ability to really open up and allow herself to be vulnerable in her work. This makes her work feel extremely relatable and empathetic, although it is autobiographical and deeply personal to her. I don’t know many people who possess the ability to make a reader feel seen by tapping into a shared emotional core that few dare expose. Laura is a rare gem and an amazing storyteller who I am excited to share with all of you. Many of her works are free to read on her Instagram, which you can find here.
In a way this is a test run for something I would like to do more of, which is to share the work of other creators you might not know that I enjoy. I’m hoping this is a success so that I can highlight other creatives in the newsletter and in the webstore in the future. You can find everything I have left in stock at my webstore here, but hurry because I’m limited to the few copies that I have so they will start selling out quickly.
Here’s a quick photo-dump from the PZS weekend:

A Quick Shout-out
I would also like to take a quick second to congratulate my friends Bob Franz, Kevin Cuffe (the writers of Metalshark Bro!) and Kelly Williams (artist on the Boris Karloff book I edit) for making the top 10 in Sideshow’s Must Read Horror Comics list with their book Skeeters. Bob and Kevin bring a level of humor and humanity to all their stories, while Kelly is a master of horror. It’s a perfect team up for Skeeters, which is about giant killer mosquitoes if you hadn’t guessed. It is one of my favorite books of the year as well. You can read the full list here.
Wrapping up
I’ll keep it short this week as I continue to catch up on some other projects that you’ll hear more about in the coming weeks. I took on a new position at my day job right as my editing work picked back up, so I’m still figuring out the work/life balance of the new schedule. With that, the newsletter has suffered, but it also means that I’ll have a lot more to share as I get back on track. Keep checking your inbox for a sneak peek into the next issue of Boris Karloff Presents: Gold Key Mysteries in the coming weeks, and maybe a little look behind the curtain of another big project that I’ve been brought in on.
